Additional information

The research concerns the development of an integrated approach, combining a numerical model with Artificial Neural Networks, to provide rapid predictions of faecal indicator levels in estuarine and coastal waters. The research has led to collaborations with the Environment Agency and the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. The model has subsequently been applied to the Ribble Estuary (see Case Study 1). Moreover, this research has fuelled a major multidisciplinary collaboration project (Cardiff/ Aberystwyth/Sheffield, £500k to Cardiff) under the Environmental Exposure & Health Initiative, jointly funded by the NERC, MRC, Defra and ESRC (GR NE/I008306).
