Additional information

The significance of this work lies in the importance of correctly predicting the mechanical behaviour of cracks and interfaces in both concrete structures and rock masses. To this end, the authors have developed an accurate numerical approach, entirely based on mechanics, for simulating such interfaces. The model developed is applicable to both 2D and 3D finite element realisations and accounts for contact and local friction between multiple asperities in a particularly novel fashion. This is the principal model for technology transfer in a recently gained £270K KTP (No. 9082) project on simulating interfaces in soil-structure problems.
