Additional information

This paper investigates fretting wear and how it is initiated in polished, cemented total hip replacements. The mechanism is accepted to be fretting wear; this paper identifies the way in which wear is initiated and propagates and models the contact at the micro level, facilitated by a novel understanding of the surface topography. The work has enabled similar measurement and modelling techniques to be used in alternative situations, particularly at the taper-head junction in modular replacements and also in skin-device contact in alternative medical devices. The Work has input directly to a large industrial contract supported by DePuy Orthopedics.
