Additional information

This research, at the time of publication, was unique in its approach to investigating the mechanisms of wear away from the bearing surface. Since the high failure rates of metal on metal implants did not tally with the amount of wear seen on the bearing surfaces. Advanced surface metrology was used as a tool to understand wear mechanisms and their contribution to global wear. The work was based on two PhD projects one industry funded (Stryker) and one receiving an Excellence award (Chinese Science Academy). This work has facilitated collaborations with DePuy Orthopaedic, UCL and Leeds University.
