Static shear strength between polished stem and seven commercial acrylic bone cements
This output developed understanding of how total hip replacements loosen and fail prematurely and why wear occurs at the stem-cement interface The original project was sponsored by Stryker (PI L Blunt). The differences in shear force required to overcome the implant-cement bond was established and information regarding surface contact breakdown, thus explaining how implants wear in vivo. From this work, a study was completed using the methods to optimise cementing technique in total knee replacements, work was presented internationally and has recieved awards for its contribution to clinical practice, as pioneered by the West Riding Knee Unit (Huddersfield Royal Infirmary).
