Additional information

This paper develops a method for determining the uncertainty of volumetric measurement of wear using a CMM, giving recommendations regarding a best practice approach. It led to invited presentations at the Royal College of Surgeons on bearing wear measurement. It has been cited as important by the ASTM standards committee developing a standard for the measurement of wear in metal-on-metal hip replacements and is cited in the current draft. It has been widely cited as pivotal in the current US litigation around the DePuy ASR implant.
