Additional information

This paper presents a unique method to estimate source sweep linearity requirements of an FMCW radar, based on a new parameter – fractional slope variation – providing a simple analytic method to determine linearity, which is critical in the design of such a radar to avoid range profile smearing due to source imperfections. This method aids radar designers to specify the sweep linearity for a given application and has applications in the future development of such radar systems. It has led to industry funding for Brennan(PI) of a railway level crossing obstruction radar detection system from Ansaldo STS, Italy (£50,182).
