An efficient approach to converting three-dimensional image data into highly accurate computational models
Professor Young's group was the first to develop the multi-part marching cubes algorithm and the only group to have extended this to volumetric marching cubes-a new approach to meshing. This has enabled a new range of problems to be addressed using physics-based simulation tools including applications in the biomedical, aerospace, automotive and oil and gas sectors. Paper co-authored by Dr Aziz of NASA Glenn (ali.abdul-aziz-1@nasa.gov) and Dr Walker of Arup (Brian.Walker@arup.com). The algorithms are incorporated in software programs by spin-off Simpleware Ltd, winner of The Queen’s Award for Innovation 2012, employing 20 staff with offices in UK, USA and Germany.
