An evolutionary multiobjective strategy for the effective management of groundwater resources
This paper describes a new hydroinformatic modelling approach developed over a 10-year period (EPSRC - GR/L67189/01 and EU funding), applied to a groundwater management case study (Italy). The machine-learning concept has since been taken up by a number of international research groups (mmarkus@illinois.edu - USA; amin.elshorbagy@usask.ca - Canada) and applied to problems in hydraulics and hydrology. The work has led to further EPSRC funding (FRMRC2: http://www.floodrisk.org.uk/) and an industrially-led project to evaluate machine-learning for real-time urban flood forecasting, which resulted in a UK Water Industry report (UKWIR: http://tinyurl.com/bm4rpbr) and a further UKWIR project (R.Kellagher@hrwallingford.com and Barry.Luck@southernwater.co.uk).
