This book of around 300 pages is a sociological history of Egypt which examines the shifting relations of power between the military, security and political institutions over a period of six decades. Kandil develops a distinctive account of what he calls the ‘power triangle’ and uses it to shed new light on the events that have shaped the modern history of Egypt. This book is the outcome of two years of research and writing, including archival research and interviews carried out in Egypt. The paperback edition includes a substantial new epilogue on the overthrow of the Islamist government in 2013.
