Additional information

Explores the physical, chemical and biological effects of adding titanium ions into the hydroxyapatite structure as compared with the substitution of silicate ions. This work provided valuable insight into the mechanism by which silicate ion addition enhances the bioactivity of hydroxyapatite bone grafts. Funded by a Faraday Healthcare Technologies Grant, co-sponsored by the EPSRC and ApaTech, the results were an important component in directing the company’s commercialization activities, since they indicated strongly the importance of chemical rather than crystallographic effects. The company was subsequently sold to Baxter (2010) for £330M. (charlie_campion@baxter.com)
