This 12,000-word chapter is to date the only published source offering a critical analysis of how museums have formed and interpreted ancient Egyptian collections, arguing that these processes are imbricated in wider epistemological trends, and that Egyptian displays continue to shape, and be shaped by, ideas about cultural heritage and race. It draws on my original research, e.g. on the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the Liverpool and Manchester museums, where racial science had a pronounced impact. Insights also derive from my experience as a museum curator, e.g. contemporary issues in display, marketing, and the antiquities trade.
