Additional information

This work is the result of international collaboration between Marcelli and Professor Fraternali from the University of Salerno, Italy (f.fraternali@unisa.it). The work proposes a new theoretical method which solves a long standing problem of quantifying elastic moduli of 2-dimensional membrane embedded in a 3-dimensional space and in contact with a thermal reservoir. This method can be applied to quantify the mechanical properties of biological cell membranes and of technologically relevant structures such as carbon nanotubes and graphene. This paper puts Marcelli at the forefront of research into mechanical properties of 2-dimensional structures embedded in 3-dimensional space.
