Additional information

A pioneering optical stethoscope was devised to listen to microscopically selected points on the heart of Drosophyla larvae (sound tracks uploaded to PLoS). The stethoscope was developed as a second channel in a dual OCT instrument which can deliver structure and function. The research was conducted collaboratively with the School of Biosciences and funded by BBSRC (BB/E002870/1). The team has proven that dilated cardiomyopathy, a severe cardiac condition, can be diagnosed using the sound produced by the heart beat. This work led to filing of the patent US20120013909.
