Additional information

Unsaturated soils are at the forefront of current geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering research. One particular difficulty in their study is the measurement of their volume change during suction controlled testing, due to the presence of air phase. The paper presents, calibrates and proves a novel volume change measurement system for unsaturated soils, developed during the EPSRC grant EP/037305/1. The system had the potential of being patented but we preferred to publish instead. It was developed together with the leading geotechnical instruments company GDS Ltd, who show interest in the commercialisation of the system: contact Jerry Sutton (jerry@gdsinstruments.com).
