Double-weighted statement

This volume began as Reynolds’ PhD thesison the ninth and tenth centuries AD,which was completed in 1998. It was then significantly expanded in its chronological scope to include the fifth to ninth centuries during a year of AHRB-funded research leave (2002-3). A review of the text and the addition of a wholly new chapter in 2007-8 completed the book. The volume entailed extensive primary research using archaeology, written evidence and toponyms in equal measure to examine a previously unexplored topic. The work is a major study of English state-formation and territoriality, equal to several substantial academic papers.
