Computational Fluid Dynamic Studies of Vortex Amplifier Design for the Nuclear Industry—I. Steady-State Conditions
This paper describes the first simulation capturing reverse flow in radial supply ports of a vortex amplifier; revealing it to be asymmetric. The study led to prototype design that substantially alleviated reverse flow in trials at National Nuclear Laboratory’s facilities (Sellafield). The design solution has since been incorporated into a new facility, planned for the Sellafield site, to render stockpile plutonium chemically inert. It would also have been retro-fitted to a Sellafield MOX Plant (SMP), with expected savings of over £1Million p.a. in inert gas usage; but the plant closed in 2011.
