A non-linear damage evolution model for mode II fatigue delamination onset and growth
Understanding fatigue behaviour of composites is key to certification of many aerospace structures including engine components. Paper provides, for first time, unified framework for describing fatigue delamination initiation and propagation in composites. Previously, these two aspects of fatigue damage had been considered distinct and independent. Predicting propagation from initiation implies that amount of experimental tests for characterising fatigue response of composite can be halved with associated cost savings for certification. As a result, Rolls-Royce plc. is supporting follow-on PhD project on mixed-mode fatigue [contact: Composites UTC Coordinator]. Paper is identified as research group highlight in REF5.
