Double-weighted statement

This 350-page book is the first narrative history in English of the Italian front (1915-18). The outcome of many years of research, it draws on official records, memoirs, journalism, novels, poetry, sculpture, historical scholarship, and interviews with the last survivors in at least four languages. It for the first time explains both the significance and the full horror of these campaigns. It was the Guardian's book of the week in August 2008, was shortlisted for the Duff Cooper Prize, runner up for the Orwell Prize (2009), and winner of the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize (2009).
