This is a 250 page book derived from the Ford Lectures in British History presented at the University of Oxford in 2010. The outcome of the research and reflections of a professional career, it has involved many hundreds of visits to libraries and archives in Britain and France. It proposes a new interpretative framework of the history of the cross-Channel polity created in 1066 and, as part of its argument, of the pan-European diaspora of the Normans. Its central arguments are built around models and analytical tools borrowed from the social and political sciences. Its approach is inter-disciplinary.
