This volume began life as a research seminar, co-organised with Dr Sandwell, at the University of Bristol. The essays for the subsequent volume were assigned and edited in two blocks: Pre-Reformation by Sandwell and Post-Reformation by Lyons. The Introduction was single-authored by Sandwell, and the volume includes a single-authored essay by Lyons, entitled ‘Preaching at the Nine O’clock Service: A Study of Shifting Meaning in a Published Sermon’, pp. 231-45.
