Additional information

Although Denicolò and Zanchettin have co-authored several articles in the REF period, only this one is submitted by both. They started working on this paper long before Denicolò joined Leicester. The research builds on previous results independently obtained by the authors: Zanchettin (JEMS 2006) shows that more intense competition may lead to an increase in the most efficient firm’s profits, whereas Denicolò (EER 2001) develops an endogenous model where the innovator may stay active for several periods. These are two key ingredients of the present paper, which would not have been possible without the separate contributions of each author
