This new edition of Cézanne's letters is one of several outcomes from six years intensive work on the artist. The research effort was focussed on checking the original manuscripts and making scrupulous new translations of over 250 documents. These had to be located in repositories throughout Europe and the United States, and, in this process, over twenty new letters were discovered. In addition, the text was equipped with a scholarly apparatus, cross-referenced to the artist's catalogue raisonné and the significant literature on the artist.
