Additional information

Smart Antenna is a key technology which can significantly improve the performance of terrestrial mobile communications, satellite communications and radar. Current smart antennas are complicated, bulky, heavy and expensive. This paper proposes a novel technique “folded monopole ESPAR antenna”, which can significantly reduce the size, weight, power consumption and cost of smart antennas. Results from a prototype confirm that the antenna can achieve electronically beam scanning over a 360 degree range and adaptive beamforming. This output resulted from a collaborative project with NPL, UK. One US patent has been filed (Application No. PCT/GB2010/051900, filed on 15/10/2010).
