Double-weighted statement

Loving Faster than Light explores the appropriation of Einstein's theory of relativity across a broad range of non-mathematical genres (including newspapers, popular science and pulp fiction) and in the archives of the poet William Empson and the astronomer Arthur Eddington. Using largely unexplored and unindexed material, the book constructs a narrative about the struggle for access to Einstein's universe against the backdrop of political developments and cultural change. Reading this newly expanded canon of new modernist writing in the light of recent work in the history of physical sciences, it explores the negotiation of elite theory for a wide audience.
