Additional information

Path planning for autonomous unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) in hostile environments with limited information is enormously challenging, theoretically and computationally. Practical real-time algorithms are presented, which provably converge and handle dynamic threats. The research was completed in the £6.5M project FLAVIIR, funded by BAE Systems and EPSRC (GR/S71552/01), to look at new technologies for future UAVs. Ten universities participated and Postlethwaite (with £418K) led the Control theme with Imperial. His work continued in the DTI/BAE Systems project ASTRAEA with the aim of making unmanned flight routine. The FLAVIIR project won the Engineer 2011 Technology and Innovation Award for Aerospace.
