Femtosecond laser micromachining of fibre Bragg gratings for simultaneous measurement of temperature and concentration of liquids
The paper was the result of international (UK-Canada) research supported by National Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada, the Ministry of Research and Innovation of Ontario, and EPSRC (grant EP/F01337X/1). Connecting with the growing interest in smart structures and embedded sensors, it proposed a novel method of inscribing periodically corrugated structures in the cladding of a FBG to improve sensitivity to liquid concentration and produced tests samples using state-of-the-art laser equipment. The investigation showed the method to be successful and work was subsequently developed for simultaneous temperature-pressure sensing for which an international patent (PCT) application has been filed.
