<02>Originality: This paper describes a workflow-oriented science gateway framework containing novel features including support for solving the problem of simultaneously accessing grids based on different middleware, managing workflow-oriented data transfer between file systems hosted in different grids and enabling the access to repositories for gateway user communities.

Significance: The paper describes principles on building comprehensive science gateway frameworks and applies them for the particular case of P-GRADE and WS-PGRADE. The latter one is the leading European science gateway framework used by European projects like DRIHM, VERCE, SHIWA, EDGI, VIALACTEA, agINFRA, CloudSME.
