This paper presents the outcomes of a collaborative project with Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland which first demonstrated the clear ability of practical photocatalytic coatings to inactivate clinically relevant pathogens and makes an important contribution towards the reduction or elimination of hospital associated infections. The research originated from related EU (FP7 AQUAPULSE no. 286641) and Royal Society (JP090423) projects on photocatalytic disinfection of water and helped secure additional funding to study the degradation mechanism of bacterial toxins in collaboration with US partners (tri-partite NSF, Science Foundation Ireland, DEL financed)
