Double-weighted statement

This is a 214 page book of about 80,000 words that has been well received both nationally and internationally. It examines the relationship between academic language and identity for a group of linguistic minority university students from widening participation backgrounds. Drawing on an ethnographically oriented study, it illustrates the students' positioning in the institution as they struggled to make the transition into higher education. It problematises the language remediation ethos that has developed in the sector as the student population has diversified and argues for more inclusive HE pedagogical practices that treat linguistic diversity as a valuable institutional resource.
