Additional information

There is circadian variation in the effectiveness of defibrillation therapy for ventricular fibrillation (VF). This paper presents the first study of circadian variation of the electrocardiogram of human VF. Uniquely our study recorded human VF sustained for several weeks in a patient supported by a ventricular assist device. Analysis of the electrocardiogram revealed significant circadian variation in VF amplitude, but not dominant frequency. The study, published in one of the leading emergency medicine journals, increases our understanding of the dynamics of this arrhythmia and provides critical validation data for computer models of human VF.
