Part funded by EPSRC Advanced Fellowship, this is one of the earliest work where principles of structural mechanics was used to predict mechanical properties of single layer graphene sheets (SLGS). A bottom up approach, starting from the fundamental properties of C-C bond, was used in conjunction with lattice mechanics. The result was scale-dependent, closed-form expressions of Young’s modulus, shear modulus and poisons ratio of SLGS. It is one of the most cited papers in the filed, was featured in Nanotechnology Highlights 2009 by IOP and was covered by national media.
