Additional information

The paper presents the first consistent framework for incorporating partial factors of safety on strength into geotechnical finite element analysis, which can be used with any constitutive model. Even before publication the paper was requested for consideration by the head of the working group concerned with numerical analysis related to the Eurocode 7 design code (andrew.lees@geofem.net). Also presented by Potts as invited lecture at CIRIA conference 2013 (Chris.Chiverrell@ciria.org) This framework, in conjunction with a complex constitutive model, was applied in industry to the design of the raising of Abberton Dam (n.kovacevic@gcg.co.uk). The paper was the BGA medal winner for 2012.
