Significance of output:

Dielectric elastomers (DEs) are novel materials made of a thin layer of elastomer sandwiched between two electrodes. It is possible to build DE actuators, also called artificial muscles, since an electric load can squeeze the elastomer longitudinally and extend it perpendicularly. Such actuators were modelled and applied for an industrial application for the first time. This research was funded by Danfoss PolyPower A/S which is the sole manufacturer and supplier of corrugated DE actuators. Dr Rustighi is also member of the ESNAM, the European Scientific Network for Artificial Muscle (COST Action MP1003).
