This paper reported a new heat flux measurement method for convection in electrical machines. A closely related conference paper (Howey, D.A., Holmes, A.S. and Pullen, K.R., Measurement of stator heat transfer in air-cooled axial flux permanent magnet machines, IECON '09, IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 3-5 November 2009, Porto, Portugal, pp. 1193-1198) was awarded a Best Paper Prize at IECON 09. The work led to involvement in a follow up EPSRC-funded project called VESI (EP/I038543/1 £3.1M) for co-author Professor KR Pullen (at City University), and is currently being pursued by his student.
