Platelet-rich plasma protects tenocytes from adverse side effects of dexamethasone and ciprofloxacin.
This work, the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration with the orthopaedics department, showed for the first time that platelet-based therapies can have bioprotective effects and underpins the first ever randomized controlled clinical trial of platelet therapies for Achilles tendon repair with Prof. Keith Willet at the JR Hospital (ISRCTN93608625). The trial is now complete and is being extended to a multi-centre randomized trial to enable such therapies to become standard of care. This work also helped to secure funding for continuing investigations from NIHR and from orthopaedic charity Joint Action (2 year clinical fellowship Joseph Alsousou).
