Additional information

This paper is significant in that it concerns the short crack arrest approach for assessing the structural integrity of components with rapidly varying stress fields. The method which I developed is used by Rolls-Royce plc (contact details available) to assess dovetail blade roots and foreign object damage impacts. The paper is a collaboration with Siegfried Fouvry at Ecole Centrale de Lyon and provides experimental verification of the approach in terms of arrested crack lengths. This validation will be important if it is to be used more widely in situations with severe stress gradients.
