Additional information

This is one of a series of articles in which conditions for the nucleation of a crack in a brittle material subject to contact loading can be rigorously quantified. One developing element of this is the re-casting of Williams' asymptotic solution to expose the internal length dimension. The paper has led to invited lectures at the Italian group of Fracture (Forni di Sopra 7-9 March 2011), and at an Areva/Safran/INSA Symposium, an industrial symposium held in Paris 23 October 2013. The problem is being studied further, and extended to anti-plane loading jointly with Prof Daniel Nelias at INSA, Lyon.
