Additional information

It had always been assumed that sliding flat faced contacts produce uniform contact pressure. This paper shows quite the reverse – that the leading edge has a singular contact pressure and the trailing edge will have a bounded pressure or may even lift off. This has important implications for wear testers, electrical brushes andother applications. This has been the subject of invited talks at Southampton, Liverpool and Bristol Universities, and at two meetings of the ‘Joints’ Research Committee of ASME.
