Relationship between structural changes and hyperpolarized gas magnetic resonance imaging in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease using computational simulations with realistic alveolar geometry.
The first paper of a collaboration between academic (Engineering Science, Computer Sciences), clinical (Churchill Hospital) and industrial partners (GE Healthcare) for the set-up of hyperpolarised gas MRI scanning in Oxford. This is a highly disruptive technology, with the potential to fundamentally change basic research and clinical management of lung disease. The work has continued with three clinical trials currently being run at the Churchill Hospital, and forms a major component of two large grant renewals: the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and the Oxford Centre for Cancer Imaging.
