This is the first model of mud-cracking in thermal barrier coatings due to instabilities in the sintering of the coating at elevated temperature. The paper is an extended version of work originally reported as a plenary lecture (San Diego, 08) and keynote presentation (ICHHM, Huangshan, 08). It has subsequently led to invitations to participate in international workshops on multiscale modelling (Oberwolfach, 12 and Lausanne, 13).
