This paper reported collaborative work with DONG-Energy and Aalborg University (Denmark). The paper received the ICE's TK Hsieh Award for 2011 and formed part of Byrne's 2011 Géotechnique Lecture, given at the ICE, invited biennially by the British Geotechnical Association and the Géotechnique Advisory Panel. This material formed part of an invited one-day master-class on foundation design for offshore renewables to geotechnical engineers at Atkins Ltd in 2012 (contact details available). This work has formed the basis for follow-on funding by EDF-Energy and also from DONG-Energy in collaboration with the Carbon Trust Offshore Wind Accelerator (PISA JIP).
