The "unburial" or resurfacing of buried offshore pipelines is a major problem for the oil and gas industry. The paper reports a detailed series of tests showing the load-deformation uplift behaviour of buried offshore pipelines as a function of relative density and velocity. The key finding is that the contractive nature of loose sand means that excess pore pressure develops rapidly, with important implications for stability of pipelines buried by jet trenching. The work builds on an EPSRC grant on pipelines (GR/S86938/01) and is being undertaken by an overseas research student (Williams), supported by a full scholarship from Oxford.
