Additional information

The paper presents an analysis of work performed during and following EPSRC grant GR/S53565/01 to investigate crowd loading on grandstands. Results and an simplified analysis are presented, with the main finding being that there is a synchronising effect of crowd members coordinating their jumping and bobbing, which increases the periodic input load to the grandstand above that predicted by earlier uncorrelated models. The results are of value to designers of grandstands, alerting them to a potentially dangerous case.
