Crystal structure and functional mechanism of a human antimicrobial membrane channel
This paper presents the first combination of atomic-resolution structure and action mechanism of an important class of antimicrobial agents. It enables structure-based drug design to be applied on antimicrobial peptides, widely described as a possible next generation of antibiotics. The paper received a commentary in Science magazine (Science 339, 1127, 2013), wide public media attention (Daily Mail, BBC Mundo, La Stampa, ScienceDaily, phys.org), and a MRC highlight on new antibiotics (http://www.bpod.mrc.ac.uk/archive/2013/4/20). Dr Zachariae is co-corresponding and co-senior author, and has had important roles in all aspects of the study from initiation and design through to publication.
