A comparison of barefoot and sprint spike conditions in sprinting
This work established the efficacy of personalised sports footwear by examining the extremes of barefoot versus shod performance in detail using motion capture analysis with elite athletes. The results showed statistically significant effects of shod versus barefoot performance in terms of various angles of motion that are known to influence overall athletic performance. The results confirmed the validity of tailoring sports footwear for elite athletes and led to project partner New Balance (contact: Senior Manager, Innovation and Engineering) announcing that some of its elite team athletes now compete in laser sintered footwear - a direct consequence of this research.
