Additional information
This is the first paper in which particle damper nonlinearity is deliberately controlled in order to optimise performance over any operating condition by applying pressure. This results in providing, for the first time, a consistent and successful method for this type of damper. The work was funded by EPSRC grant GR/T28393/01. This work has provided the basis of new collaborative research with Beihang University (China) to look at metal-rubber particles and has resulted in studentships funded by the Chinese government and further publications (contact: Prof. Jie Hong, Beihang University hongjie@buaa.edu.cn).
