<05>This paper reports on experimental work carried out over five years, during which time open virtual world (OVW) technologies advanced significantly in many areas, but not in networking protocols. The work is technically complex, incorporating analytical and conceptual dimensions accompanied by rigorous measurements and leading to the engineering of novel and successful networking solutions. It addresses the significant problem of how quality of service impacts on the end user's quality of experience in the emerging class of OVW Internet applications sometimes referred to as the 3D immersive web.
