Additional information

•First systematic methodology presented for the design and multi-objective optimization of a microfluidic device, applied on a renowned passive micromixer

•It completes the first true optimisation study of a micromixer by using a continuous design space, whereas previous publications only ‘improved’ the design

•Integration of CFD with numerical optimisation techniques allows micromixer optimisation using more than one performance criteria for the first time

•The methodology has been applied for follow-up studies by Kim's lab at Inha University (S Korea) and it motivated the application of a comparable method at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (ROC)
