This paper published in the Journal of Design Research presents the results of empirical research from a three-year action research study on sustainable design education, The study analysed over 400 student conceptual design solutions in the field of sustainability. The findings of the study suggested that new vocations were required for design students to engage more fully in Sustainability. Primarily by students moving away from a stringent focus on object design.

The findings have Informed the curriculum design at the University of Western Sydney, RMIT University and informed the development of the future Design Interaction program at Lancaster University.

The work was also presented at the international ‘changing the change’ conference in Italy, in 2008.
